Shopping, Golf, More Beach, More Food and the Trip Home

Friday

Friday was rainy and a little wet, so we hit the outlet malls in the morning and found a great local store called Palmetto Moon, which the boys absolutely loved. It had all the Southern Marsh and Vineyard Vines type clothing, including Guy Harvey, who paints fish and other wildlife.

That afternoon, the whether cleared a little, so the boys went to a lazy river at another sister resort to ours while Pam and I did some shopping at Coligny Plaza, some "beachy" sort of shops on the southern end of the island.

That night we ate a Five Guys Burgers and Fries, which was our one break from seafood. It was some excellent eats!

After this, Jeron, Trey and I went fishing on the docks of Shelter Cove. We fished until almost midnight, using shrimp and squid. We caught a whiting and sea bass and had a great time. We had light, restroom, and our own live band, which was performing at the restaurant above the docks. Great time to just relax and fish.

Saturday

Trey and I got up early and played some more golf, this time at Oyster Reef, a Rees Jones designed course with 66 bunkers!! I think I was in about half of them!!! It rained on us in the middle of the first hole, and we thought, "Oh no, here we go again," but after that, it didn't rain but was very humid. I shot a 93 and was happy with that score!!

That afternoon, we all hit the beach for one last time. It was a little sunnier than it had been and the wind was whipping sand up a little, but it was great. The water was 80 degrees and very nice.

That last night, we ate at the Seagrass Cafe, a New York style restaurant that had awesome service and small portions with high prices--I did say it was like New York. Great food nonetheless. We were able to relax as a family, reflect on the week we had, and focus our attention on the trip we started the next day--back home in two days.

After supper, we got all our luggage, fishing poles, golf clubs, beach stuff and everything ready to go that next morning. Overall, we had a fabulous time at Island Links resort at Port Royal. We enjoyed all the new experiences we had, the people we met, and the memories we made along the way.

We left Sunday morning, spent the night in North Little Rock at the same Hilton Garden Inn we stayed in on the way to Hilton Head, and then we were back in Amarillo by 6 p.m. on Monday.

Great, great trip!!

Beach, Burgers, Gullah Gal & Fireworks!

Wednesday:

On Wednesday, we slept in, spent time at the beach, and then went out to the CharBar Grill to eat and hear a local 16-year-old girl sing. She had just cut a CD, and she had all her friends there. It was a good time. Earlier in the day, it was enjoyable time just spending time jumping into the waves and then resting on the sandy beach. We got sand in just about every part of our our bodies, but we had a great time.

Thursday:

We at a brunch at Stacks before going to Shelter Cove and the Gullah Gal for some Atlantic Coast fishing. When Captain Steve set anchor in the Atlantic, we got into some 5 foot waves while we fished. We had to learn quickly how to make sure we had 3 points of contact with the boat at all times so we wouldn't be tossed overboard. We started hitting some small shark and then caught a 20 lb, 33 inch Red Fish, only the 6th the Gullah Gal has caught all year. Captain Steve seemed pretty excited about it and even got a picture with his own camera. The fish was outside the slot of 27 inches, otherwise we'd be eating some Red Fish steaks tonight!
After a while, we started feeling the affect of the wavy motion, so we headed back inland and fished in 30 feet of water just outside Broad Creek. We caught some bigger sharks, both black tips and one bull shark. They are fun to catch and put up a pretty good fight on light tackle. Overall, the trip was definitely the adventure we had wanted. I'll be ready to go again soon!!

Tonight, we headed back to Shelter Cove for fireworks, which weren't anything spectacular, but the setting definitely was.

Rain Wrecks Round, but it's all good!

The boys and I played (almost) a round of golf today at the Barony Course at Port Royal. It misted on us most of the time, and then on the 16th, God released the sky upon us, and Trey and Parker had both just knocked it stiff on the Par 3, both with close birdie putts. Unfortunately, by the time we got to the green, water was literally puddling on the grass and nearly carried their balls away!  Needless to say, we were all soaked to the skin, and it felt even deeper than that. At least we now know what it feels like when the ocean is lifted up and then dropped upon you--not good!!

Pam and I went shopping a bit, and then we explored Shelter Cove, where the boys and I are going to launch on July 4th. We met the captain of the other boat (True Grit) and he said we'd love Captain Steve, who looks like Santa. Should be a fun time on the Gullah Gal. (Gullah are like Creole, who both are descendents of African slaves. The Gullah get their name from Angola, where many may have come from.) The captain said we'd most likely catch shark and that they give a pretty good fight. Looking forward to it.

Tonight, we all went the Old Oyster Factory restaurant, waiting over an hour for the awesome meal we had. No worries! The views were amazing, and we had plenty of time to visit and enjoy each others' company. Awesome good time!

Savannah Yesterday / Harbour Town Today!

Yesterday:

We made our way from Atlanta through some rainy weather down to Macon and then over to Savannah, where we ate lunch and spent the day on River Street on the Savannah River. We discovered a taste for grouper at One-Eyed Lizzy's. We had some fun shopping and looking at the Spanish moss in the trees in the old part of town. When we left for Hilton Head, we crossed over a massive span bridge that was like getting a thrill ride for free. It was WAY huge!

Upon arriving and checking in at Island Links Resort in Port Royal Plantation, we went to the beach to check it out, and we dipped our toes into the Atlantic. It was late, so the boys came back to the resort to swim in the pool here. We all were tired, so we ordered pizza, relaxed, and got used to our condo.

Today:

We slept in today, and then went to Harbour Town so the boys could parasail. They had a great time, and Pam and I enjoyed watching them. We then at a The Crazy Crab, a wonderful seafood place at the Harbour Town marina. After lunch, we shopped all the little shoppes there. We loved this area of Sea Pines Plantation, which is where the PGA holds the MCI classic golf tournament every year.

At 3:30 this afternoon, we came back to the resort and swam before going to outlet malls and shopped again! We were all tired again, so we brought back Wendy's.
